Ottawa 6, at Buffalo 3: Daniel Alfredsson had two of the Senators’ five third-period goals and Anton Volchenkov ended a third-period tie with less than two minutes left. Volchenkov, who also had two assists, scored his first of the season with a slap shot from the right point that ricocheted twice before going past goalie Ryan Miller for the winner.

Washington 3, at Carolina 2 (SO): Viktor Kozlov scored in the third round of the shootout. Alexander Ovechkin scored his club-record 61st goal, Alexander Semin also scored and Nicklas Backstrom had two assists for the Capitals, who have won six of seven. Jeff Hamilton and Erik Cole scored power-play goals for the Hurricanes.

Pittsburgh 2, at New Jersey 0: Marc-Andre Fleury had 31 saves and the Penguins clinched a playoff berth and took a big step toward winning the Atlantic Division title. Pittsburgh opened a four-point lead over New Jersey in the division and pulled to within a point of Montreal for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

Boston 6, at Toronto 2: Marco Sturm and rookie David Krejci each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins. Jeremy Reich, Phil Kessel, Shawn Thornton and Glen Murray also scored for Boston, which maintained its hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Alexei Ponikarovsky and Jason Blake scored for the Maple Leafs.

at Tampa Bay 3, Florida 1: Jeff Halpern had a goal and two assists and the Lightning hurt the Panthers’ late playoff push. Florida, 8-1-1 in its last 10 games, is five points behind eighth-place Boston for the final playoff spot. Michel Ouellet and Filip Kuba also scored for Tampa Bay. David Booth scored for Florida.

Philadelphia 2, at N.Y. Rangers 1 (OT): Mike Richards scored a breakaway goal 2:16 into overtime. Sean Avery turned over the puck in the offensive zone to defenseman Jason Smith, who sent Richards in alone. With Rangers defenseman Marek Malik chasing, Richards cut to his backhand and swept a shot past Henrik Lundqvist.

at Nashville 3, Columbus 0: Goaltender Dan Ellis stopped 36 shots for his fifth career shutout and the Predators earned their second consecutive victory to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Predators trail eighth-place Colorado by two points in the Western Conference.

Detroit 2, at St. Louis 1: Johan Franzen’s power-play goal ended a third-period tie and Henrik Zetterberg scored his 150th career goal, helping the Red Wings to their fourth victory in a row. Andy McDonald scored in the second period for the Blues, who played their first home game in 22 days.

at Calgary 3, Vancouver 2: Daymond Langkow and Dion Phaneuf scored 41 seconds apart in the third period and the Flames moved into first place in the Northwest Division. Calgary took a one-point lead over idle Minnesota. Each team has five games left. Jarome Iginla scored his 49th goal of the season for the Flames, who have won four in a row at home and are 6-0-3 in their last nine at home.

at Phoenix 5, San Jose 4 (OT): Martin Hanzal scored on a wrist shot with 1:37 left in overtime to give the Coyotes the victory.
