Other deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq or who died elsewhere of their injuries:

Matthew W. Brown, 20, of Zelienople, Pa.; private, Army. Brown died of an apparent gunshot wound while on guard duty in a noncombat-related incident May 11 in Asadabad, Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment, 18th Fires Brigade (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Victor M. Cota, 33, of Tucson; sergeant, Army. Cota died Wednesday in Baghdad of injuries suffered a day earlier when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Kadamiya, northwest of the capital. He was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

John K. Daggett, 21, of Phoenix; sergeant, Army. Daggett died Thursday of injuries suffered May 1 when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle in Baghdad. He died in Halifax, Canada, while en route from Iraq to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The plane was diverted to Canada when his condition worsened. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Ara T. Deysie, 18, of Parker, Ariz.; private first class, Army. Deysie was killed May 9 when his unit was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktia province, near the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Jessica A. Ellis, 24, of Bend, Ore.; corporal, Army. Ellis was killed May 11 when her vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Baghdad. She was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Joseph A. Ford, 23, of Knox, Ind.; specialist, Army National Guard. Ford was killed May 10 when his vehicle overturned in Al Asad, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 152nd Cavalry Regiment, 76th Brigade Combat Team in New Albany, Ind.
