Man dies in home explosion
State fire officials say a man was killed in a fiery explosion that destroyed a San Diego County home.
State fire Capt. Nick Schuler said firefighters a quarter-mile away were awakened by a large explosion about 1:30 a.m. Friday at a home in the gated Ramona community of Mount Woodson.
The blast blew a window 100 feet and hurled the metal garage door across a street. The two-story home was burning when fire crews arrived, and it took less than an hour to control the flames.
Firefighters found the burned body of a man in the backyard.
His identity and the cause of the fire were under investigation.
Schuler said the home recently was vacated by a renter.
Schuler said the 4,000-square-foot house was destroyed, and he estimated the damage to be about $900,000.
