A 72-year-old motorist and a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy remained hospitalized Monday for serious injuries they suffered over the weekend in Covina when the officer ran a red light while responding to an emergency call and collided with the man’s vehicle.

Arthur Lerille, a local horse trainer, was being treated for head and arm injuries in the intensive care unit of Pomona Valley Hospital, said his wife, Cindy Lerille. Her husband suffered head gashes and short-term memory loss and will require surgery on his left arm, she said.

Deputy Brian Harper, 39, suffered spinal cord injuries and several broken bones, authorities said. He is being treated at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and is expected to survive.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol is investigating.

Lerille, who was driving a 1989 Cadillac, was on his way to work at Santa Anita racetrack about 5:15 a.m. Saturday when Harper ran a red light while responding to a call of a man with a gun, said Edmund Zorrilla a spokesman for the CHP.
