Heatley leads Senators past the Penguins, 3-1

Dany Heatley scored two more goals and Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson had two assists for the Senators, who beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1, to split their NHL opening weekend series on Sunday at Stockholm.

Heatley, who also had a goal in Ottawa’s 4-3 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday, helped the Senators take three of four points during the season-opening European series.

“As a group it was a big weekend for us,” Heatley said. “We were hungry for these two games. Even if we only got one point last night we felt we worked hard. We played well and could easily have won that game.”

Alex Goligoski spoiled Ottawa goalie Alex Auld’s shutout bid with a goal two seconds before the final buzzer in front of another sold-out crowd of 13,699 at Globe Arena.

Wade Redden and Scott Gomez each scored second-period goals and the New York Rangers rallied to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-1, to sweep their two-game, season-opening series at Prague, Czech Republic.

Tampa Bay Coach Barry Melrose, in his first two games behind the Lightning bench is already frustrated.

“We don’t compete,” he said of the Lightning, which tied the Kings with an NHL-low 71 points last season. “We’re too easy to play against. Until that changes we’re going to have trouble. We have a lot of skill on our team, but skill means nothing if you don’t work hard.”

In exhibition games, Brad Lukowich and Patrick Marleau scored 53 seconds apart late in the second period and the San Jose Sharks closed out the preseason with a 3-1 victory over the Kings at West Valley City, Utah. Kyle Calder scored the only goal for the Kings, tying the score early in the second period. . . . Defenseman Nathan McIver scored past Roberto Luongo 22 seconds into overtime to give the Ducks a 4-3 victory over the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.
