Canseco faces drug charge
Former major league star Jose Canseco appeared in federal court Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of attempting to smuggle a restricted drug into the U.S. from Mexico. The judge set a preliminary hearing for Nov. 4.
Canseco was allegedly found to be carrying a vial of human chorionic gonadotropin, a fertility drug. In women, the drug can help hold a pregnancy; for men, the drug can increase sperm count.
Canseco, after his career finished, detailed his steroid use in a book that claimed drug use is widespread in baseball.
