Kiffin pursues grievance on salary

Former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin filed a grievance with the NFL on Wednesday to claim the lost salary he maintains he is still owed by the team.

Kiffin was fired late last month because of what owner Al Davis described as acts of insubordination and lying.

Kiffin was still owed about $2.6 million from the three-year contract that he signed in January 2007, but Davis has refused to pay. Commissioner Roger Goodell will ultimately rule on the grievance, but there was no date for a hearing scheduled. Kiffin had a 5-15 record with the Raiders.

The Detroit Lions worked out quarterback Daunte Culpepper, and Coach Rod Marinelli said he liked how the veteran looked. . . . Seattle announced that backup quarterback Seneca Wallace will make his third consecutive start Sunday in place of Matt Hasselbeck, who is sidelined because of a knee injury.

Nadal among Masters winners

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and defending champion David Nalbandian reached the third round of the Paris Masters.

Nadal defeated Florent Serra, 6-2, 6-4, and Nalbandian defeated Nicolas Kiefer, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Federer saved two set points in the tiebreaker to beat Robin Soderling, 6-4, 7-6 (7).

Other second-round winners included Andy Murray, who defeated Sam Querrey, 6-2, 6-4, and James Blake, who defeated Simone Bolelli, 6-7 (10), 6-3, 6-4.

Daly spends time in police custody

John Daly was taken into custody Sunday morning for 24 hours by police in Winston-Salem, N.C., after he was found drunk outside a Hooters restaurant. Police said in a statement Wednesday that officers went to the restaurant on a medical call. When they arrived, Daly was being treated by emergency workers after losing consciousness. . . . Anthony Kim, who is ranked No. 8 in the world, has joined the European tour, the latest of half a dozen U.S. tour players who have decided to take up joint membership in Europe for the 2009 season. . . . Kent R. Keller of Los Angeles, a member of Wilshire Country Club and Hideaway Golf Club, was elected the 84th president of the Southern California Golf Assn.

Hollywood Park will cut purses

Only four days after horse racing rode high with a successful Breeders’ Cup event at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park announced it would cut all overnight (non-stakes) purses for its autumn meeting, starting with Sunday’s races.

The 6.25% cut, announced by Hollywood Park President Jack Liebau, was caused by the lack of agreement on percentage of return from out-of-state account wagering sites. The Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) had sought one fee and were rebuffed by account wagering outlets. That reduced the amount of revenue available for purses. Liebau said that account wagering deposit outlets TVG, YouBet.com, TwinSpires and Xpressbet would all be available to bettors in California.

Queen Ofthe Catsle, trained by Howard Zucker, won the opening-day feature at Hollywood Park, as expected, in the $65,000 Dance In the Mood Stakes. She paid $3.80, $2.80 and $2.60. Opening-day attendance was 3,446.

The coaches and media selected Cal State Northridge to win the 2008-09 Big West Conference men’s basketball regular-season title at the conference’s annual media day. The Matadors received 14 of 20 first-place votes.
