at Toronto 9, Minnesota 0: Jesse Litsch threw a four-hit shutout and the Blue Jays won their fifth in a row and completed a three-game sweep of the Twins. Litsch (10-8) walked two and struck out three and is 2-1 with an earned-run average of 0.94 in four starts since being recalled from triple A on Aug. 14. Minnesota wrapped up a season-long 14-game trip with a 5-9 mark and fell 1 1/2 games behind the idle Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. The Twins have lost nine of 12.

at Kansas City 5-9, Oakland 4-6: Jose Guillen drove in three runs, Kyle Davies ended a four-game losing streak and the Royals completed a sweep of a doubleheader and the three-game series between two of the AL’s worst teams. Joey Gathright hit a run-scoring single in the 10th inning of the first game, which began in front of only a few hundred fans. The Royals’ David DeJesus had three hits in each game.

at Tampa Bay 7, New York 5: Scott Kazmir gave up one hit in six scoreless innings, and the Rays’ bullpen weathered ninth-inning home runs by Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez to hang on against the Yankees. Willy Aybar homered and drove in three runs for the AL East-leading Rays, who avoided a three-game sweep and extended their lead in the division over second-place Boston to 3 1/2 games.

Angels 7, at Detroit 1: Ervin Santana, who won his first six decisions this year, is 4-0 in seven starts since July 27 after going 7 1/3 innings against the Tigers.
