USC will carry a No. 1 national ranking into its Thursday night Pacific 10 Conference opener against a team that has already lost a conference game -- to Stanford -- and was routed by Penn State before picking up its first win Saturday against Hawaii. So it couldn’t happen again . . . could it? The last time the Trojans visited Corvallis, in 2006, they were ranked No. 3 before having their record 27-game Pac-10 winning streak ended, 33-31, when a two-point conversion failed in the final seconds.
