Prosecutors say they will prove Bonds got steroids

Federal prosecutors say they will prove personal trainer Greg Anderson supplied Barry Bonds with the steroids that led to a positive test in November 2000, the off-season before the slugger hit a major league-record 73 home runs for the San Francisco Giants.

In a court filing Wednesday in San Francisco, prosecutors provided a glimpse of their trial strategy against Bonds, who is accused of lying to a 2003 grand jury investigating steroid use among elite athletes. Prosecutors said they have two documents showing Bonds tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2000 and that Anderson supplied the drugs, but they did not give details.

Prosecutors made the claim in opposing Bonds’ bid to have nine of the 15 felony charges against him tossed out.

A Compton judge sentenced football recruit Maurice Simmons to four years in prison for his part in a robbery.

Simmons was found guilty of felony robbery, assault with a firearm and a misdemeanor of allowing someone to bring a gun into his car. A probation officer had recommended that Simmons receive probation, citing his potential as a college football player.

“He’s stunned,” attorney Michael Carney said. “He’s kind of numb about it right now.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Simmons and co-defendant Lamont Hall in March, after they robbed a man at gunpoint on a Compton street.

Prosecutors never alleged Simmons handled the gun. Hall received 12 years in prison.

Simmons’ mother and church pastor spoke at the sentencing. Simmons, who played linebacker for Compton Dominguez High, had committed to USC, where his older brother, Melvin, played in 2002-03.

Former Nebraska running back Thunder Collins was arrested Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after a shooting left one person dead and another seriously wounded. Collins is in police custody and faces murder charges, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said.

Police also arrested Karnell Burton, 20, on suspicion of criminal homicide, attempted first-degree murder, and weapons charges. And an arrest warrant was issued for Ahmad Johnson, 21.

Timothy Thomas was killed about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday during a drug deal in a midtown Omaha neighborhood, authorities said.

Collins, 29, played for the Cornhuskers in 2000-02. He quit the team after being suspended four games for an undisclosed NCAA rules violation, and he has had a string of run-ins with the law since. He played at Manual Arts High and East Los Angeles College.

Armstrong not set for California race

Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong officially announced his return to professional cycling, but he did not commit to racing in February’s Amgen Tour of California. Armstrong, 37, who has been retired since winning his record-setting seventh Tour de France in 2005, had said he probably would race at least five times in 2009 and included the California race on that schedule.

But at a news conference, Armstrong, who also announced he would be racing for the Astana team managed by Johan Bruyneel, who was with Armstrong for all his Tour de France wins, said his only definite plans were to race in Australia’s Tour Down Under in Adelaide in January, the Tour de France and the Leadville 100 mountain bike race next fall.

Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports, which owns and operates the Tour of California, said that he was still negotiating for Armstrong to race in California.

China’s 2000 team under investigation

China’s gold medal gymnasts aren’t the only ones whose ages are getting a closer look. The investigation into the eligibility of the Chinese women’s team in Beijing has been expanded to include members of the 2000 squad, which won the bronze medal in Sydney, Australia, the Associated Press has learned.

International gymnastics officials are examining whether Yang Yun and Dong Fangxiao, in particular, were old enough to compete.

Ducks, Kings win exhibitions

Bobby Ryan and Corey Perry scored two goals each and Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and three assists to lead the Ducks to a 6-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks in their opening exhibition at the Honda Center.

Tickets for Oscar De La Hoya’s upcoming bout with Manny Pacquiao almost completely sold out a few hours after going on sale, guaranteeing the second-largest gate revenue in boxing history.

Only a handful of single seats were still available Wednesday afternoon for the Dec. 6 fight at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, which seats about 16,000 for boxing. The total gate revenue will be nearly $17 million, Golden Boy Chief Executive Richard Schaefer said.
