Kansas City 8, at Minnesota 1: A night after erasing a five-run deficit against the White Sox to reclaim first place in the AL Central, the Twins fell flat in a loss to the surging Royals, who hammered Francisco Liriano (6-4) for six runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings. Minnesota remained half a game ahead of second-place Chicago, which lost to Cleveland.

at Detroit 6, Tampa Bay 4: Gary Sheffield hit two home runs, giving him 499 in his career, and the Tigers beat the Rays, who clinched the AL East championship when Boston lost to New York later in the evening.

New York 19, at Boston 8: Backup shortstop Cody Ransom homered twice, Robinson Cano drove in five runs and Bobby Abreu and Xavier Nady scored four times each as the Yankees romped at Fenway Park.

Toronto 3, at Baltimore 0 (7 innings): Scott Richmond gave up four hits in six innings to earn his first major league victory and the Blue Jays handed the Orioles their 10th consecutive loss in a game halted by rain in the seventh inning.

Cleveland 11, at Chicago 8: John Danks (11-9) gave up seven runs and seven hits in four innings and took the loss for the White Sox. The Indians’ Scott Lewis (4-0) gave up homers to Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski during his five innings but got the victory.

at Seattle 10, Oakland 8: Jose Lopez homered twice and drove in four runs for the Mariners

Texas 12, at Angels 1: John Lackey, in his last start before the playoffs, had his worst outing of the season, giving up 10 runs and 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings.
