The Los Angeles Sol defeated Sky Blue FC, 2-0, Sunday at TD Bank Ballpark in a Women’s Professional Soccer game.

Despite the fact that neither team scored in the first 40 minutes, the Sol had the better of the chances, including two opportunities for Marta inside the penalty area. The first chance came in the 19th minute when she created some space for herself and unleashed a low left-footed shot that sailed wide of the far post.

In the 25th minute, Marta eluded two defenders inside the area, only to slip as she reached the end line, allowing the ball to squirt off her left foot and easily into the hands of goalkeeper Jenni Branham.

In the 42nd minute, Marta put the Sol ahead, 1-0, after splitting two defenders inside the box and putting her off-balance shot inside the far post for her first WPS goal. Marta then doubled the Sol’s lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute when she tapped in a cross from forward Han Duan.

“I am very happy to have scored my first two goals in WPS,” Marta said. “They were both opportunities that I was glad that I was able take advantage of and give us the win.”
