Brian Gay’s run of five straight birdies lifted him past a revived Todd Hamilton after two rounds of the Verizon Heritage on Friday at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Gay made six birdies on the front nine, including five in a row from the fourth through ninth holes to help him to a 66 and, at nine-under par, a one-stroke lead over former British Open champion Hamilton.

First-round leader Alex Cejka followed his 64 with an even-par 71 and was tied at seven-under with two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen.

Janzen’s round of 70 featured an ace on the 17th hole.

Brendon Todd made Nationwide Tour history by making a hole in one at the same hole for the second straight day at the Athens Regional Foundation Classic in Athens, Ga.

The former Georgia All-American aced the 147-yard 17th hole on Friday, using an eight-iron during the second round at the Jennings Mill Country Club course.

During Thursday’s opening round, Todd used a seven-iron when the hole played 157 yards, and he finished with a four-under 68. He is five-under for the $550,000 event.

Todd is the first player in the 20-year history of the tour to ace the same hole twice in the same tournament.

Larry Nelson shot a six-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over Nick Price after the first round of the Outback Pro-Am in Lutz, Fla.

Nelson got going with a chip-in for par at No. 13 at the Champions Tour event at TPC Tampa Bay. He then had birdies at Nos. 16, 1, 3 and 8.

Peters traded to Eagles

Buffalo traded Jason Peters to the Eagles rather than risk another off-season holdout from the disgruntled two-time Pro Bowl left tackle. The Eagles then signed Peters to a $53 million, four-year contract extension that would keep him in Philadelphia through 2014, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press.

Peters will earn $60 million over the next six seasons, including $25 million in guaranteed money, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity, because terms weren’t released.

The NFL has moved up the start time of the New York Jets’ game against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 27, Yom Kippur, after the team complained to the league about having to play home games on consecutive Jewish holidays. The league rescheduled the 4:15 start to 1 p.m.

Dementieva advances

Top-seeded Elena Dementieva advanced to the Family Circle Cup semifinals in Charleston, S.C., when Dominika Cibulkova quit in the second set because of a leg injury.

Dementieva next meets fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, who routed Virginie Razzano 6-2, 6-0. Sabine Lisicki, the 16th-seed who ousted Venus Williams on Thursday, advanced with an easy 6-4, 6-0 victory over unseeded Elena Vesnina. She will face sixth-seed Marion Bartoli, who easily eliminated Melinda Czink, 6-4, 6-1.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal moved one step closer to his fifth straight final at the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco, defeating Ivan Ljubicic 6-3, 6-3 in his second match of the day.

Nadal next faces fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who reached his first career semifinal on clay after beating Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (1), 6-4.

GYMNASTICS

Georgia wins national title

Georgia sent out its retiring coach, Suzanne Yoculan, with a fifth straight national title and record 10th overall at the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships in Lincoln, Neb.Georgia finished with a four-event score of 197.825, its second highest of the year and better than the 197.450 it posted at last year’s national meet. Alabama, which upset Georgia at the Southeastern Conference meet, was runner-up with a season-high 197.575.

Martin wins pole

Mark Martin won his third pole of the season, taking the top spot at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz.

Martin ran a lap at 133.814 mph in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to beat Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch for the top starting spot tonight. Before this season, Martin hadn’t won a pole since 2001.

U.S. Olympic Committee acting CEO Stephanie Streeter resigned from the federation’s board of directors and will serve in her new position at least through the Vancouver Olympics.

Allyson Felix, silver medalist in the 200 meters and gold medalist in the 1,600-meter relay in Beijing, headlines the field for the 51st Mt. SAC Relays today at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut. Felix will compete in the 400 relay and sprint medley relays.
