A proposition
Re “The price of Props. 1D and 1E,” Opinion, April 23
An April 15 Times story cited ACLU claims of mistreatment of mentally ill inmates at the Men’s Central Jail due to overcrowding and obsolescence. The ACLU recommends that the jail be closed.
An April 9 story reported a $1.6-million settlement paid by Costa Mesa’s College Hospital for dumping mentally ill patients on skid row. Over the last few years, many hospitals have been caught doing the same.
Approval of Proposition 1E would divert to the general fund voter-approved money intended for new mental-illness programs. How about we vote no and use the funds to relieve the jail and hospital stress resulting from the absence of needed resources?
Is there within the general fund a need greater than this?
