The Pauley plan

Re “The game’s changed for Pauley Pavilion,” Opinion, Aug. 5

UCLA has put forward a carefully constructed and fiscally responsible plan for renovating Pauley Pavilion. Costs will be covered by resources unavailable to address the budget crisis. Several additional points require clarification:

* No new student fees are needed. Revenues from existing campus-based fees, collected specifically for student facilities and programs, will be utilized.

* Debt will be repaid entirely by revenues generated by our athletics programs.

* Due to the favorable market for construction projects, now is the best time to proceed. The longer we wait, the greater the cost.

* Pauley Pavilion is a multipurpose facility that hosts more than just athletic events. After 45 years, it needs improvements.

We are confident in the success of our plan to deliver a modernized facility that will preserve the legacy of UCLA’s championship athletics and meet the needs of multiple other users. Our community deserves nothing less.
