Microsoft Corp. is expected to announce a partnership with Nokia, part of an effort by its Office unit to forge closer ties with mobile-phone makers.

Microsoft is readying an update of Office for release next year, a bid to attract more users and encourage older customers to upgrade.

The company plans to offer free word-processing and spreadsheet software that runs in a Web browser. It also has demonstrated versions of those programs on mobile phones.
