Headed to the mall

Macy’s is stepping into the high-profile collaboration game, teaming up with New York designer Rachel Roy for an exclusive collection called Rachel Rachel Roy out this month. The American retail institution is betting that Roy’s talent for blending uptown sleek with downtown street will appeal to the shopper who might not be accustomed to finding her sensibility at the mall. And other designers are likely to look with interest at the reach Roy’s collection gains in a department store such as Macy’s -- the 151-year-old retail giant has 840 locations in 45 states and had sales of $24.9 billion last year.

Roy, who grew up in Monterey, Calif., started her fashion career as an intern at Rocawear, hip-hop entrepreneur Damon Dash’s clothing line, and was its creative director by the time she launched her eponymous label in 2004. (She married Dash in 2005 and has two daughters but filed for divorce this year.)

Roy is a bona fide socialite who can flit easily between luxe and edgy. She was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of American two years ago and has seen her red-carpet-ready creations worn by First Lady Michelle Obama and Hollywood actresses Eva Mendes, Kate Hudson and Penelope Cruz.

The Rachel Rachel Roy line starts at $40 for jewelry, $50 for sportswear, $60 for handbags and $70 for footwear, topping out around $399 for outerwear.

The look that best exemplifies the Rachel Rachel Roy street-chic collection combines a graffiti-print dress ($109) with leggings ($59) and matching pumps and tote (both $89). Other styles include a leopard-print jacket ($149), chain-link stitch T-shirt ($89) and a clutch with a chain-link strap ($79). Studs accent a sleeveless dress ($109), worn with a three-quarter-sleeve coat with metal button ($169) and a large hobo bag ($99).

“The Rachel Rachel Roy collection is the younger sister to the Rachel Roy collection,” Roy says. “She’s a bit edgier, faster and quicker and finds creative freedom through clothing -- how not to look like everyone else.
