A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge Tuesday ordered a preliminary injunction restricting gang activity in a 1.4-square-mile zone around a South Los Angeles high school.

It’s the city’s first to be centered on a school and was sought after a nine-month investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department found that students at Fremont High were frequently threatened and attacked by gang members.

Under the order, gang members are banned from congregating in the area bounded by Florence Avenue on the north, Central Avenue on the east, Manchester Avenue on the south and the 110 Freeway on the west. The zone extends 100 yards beyond each of the boundaries.

Gang members could be arrested for violating the terms of the injunction, which includes blocking the path of anyone walking through the zone. Within the last year, several young people in the neighborhood have been shot, beaten or stabbed.
