NATIONAL BRIEFING / WASHINGTON, D.C.

Times Wire Reports

Federal safety officials said they have confirmed there were birds in both failed engines of the US Airways airliner that ditched into New York’s Hudson River last month. All 155 people aboard survived the dramatic emergency water landing.

The National Transportation Safety Board said remains from both engines have been sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington to identify the bird species.
