Re “Spending to fight California wildfires surpasses $1 billion,” Dec. 31
Your article regarding the cost to taxpayers to fight wildfires in 2008 mentioned legislative attempts to reduce this cost.
Unfortunately, the governor chose to veto Assemblyman Dave Jones’ (D-Sacramento) bill that would have required developers to provide adequate access roads in areas with a high risk of wildfires.
All housing developments need two roads for people to get in and out. The roads need to be designed so firetrucks are able to use them.
Fires may be inevitable; bad planning is not. We need to stop wasting money on dangerous, avoidable building programs.
