“Slumdog Millionaire,” a drama set in Mumbai, India, about a young man reflecting on his turbulent life while participating on a game show, was the big winner Thursday evening at the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.’s 14th annual Critics’ Choice Awards.

The sleeper indie hit won best film, best director for Danny Boyle, best writer for Simon Beaufoy, best young actor/actress for Dev Patel and best composer for A.R. Rahman.

Sean Penn earned two awards for best actor and best ensemble for “Milk.” Tying for best actress were Anne Hathaway for “Rachel Getting Married” and Meryl Streep for “Doubt.”

The late Heath Ledger won supporting actor for “The Dark Knight” and Kate Winslet received supporting actress for “The Reader.”

“Wall-E” was named best animated film, with “Dark Knight” picking up honors for best action movie.

Best comedy went to “Tropic Thunder,” with “Waltz With Bashir” earning the foreign-language film award.

“Man on Wire” won best documentary, and Bruce Springsteen took home the best song honors for “The Wrestler,” from the film of the same name.

The awards, which took place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, were broadcast Thursday night on VH1.
