BCS and USC, duh

There is much controversy about the BCS championship this year, but all reasonable people should be able to agree that if a team made it through one of the two toughest conferences with only a single close loss, won a closely fought BCS bowl game over a traditional power ranked in the top 10, and beat the Oklahoma Sooners by 10 points on a neutral field, they deserve to be the national champions.

So congratulations to the Florida Gators and the Texas Longhorns.

Utah is a very nice story and deserves all of the kudos they earned this season. But for the writers to think they are the second-best team in the nation -- and better than USC -- is beyond ludicrous and laughable. USC would beat Utah by double digits with the game close . . . until kickoff.

Florida wins the BCS impressively and is No. 1 in both the AP and coaches’ poll. Pete Carroll’s response: “I don’t think you know who the best team is, you just know which team got the most votes.”

If USC had been No. 1 in the BCS and every poll, would he say that? I don’t think so. He says he thinks USC could beat Florida. Really? After the lethargic second half USC had against Penn State and the impressive second half Florida had (on both sides of the ball) against Oklahoma?

You would rather play with Sanchez as your quarterback than Tebow? I don’t think so. It’s statements like these that make USC football what it is: a program of occasional greatness and perpetual vanity.
