Don’t lock him up
Charles Barkley is 45 years old, and has no prior criminal record. He is arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, and Diane Pucin reports that there is no word of Barkley’s intent to enter rehab? Ms. Pucin would do well to stick to sports reporting.
A single arrest for driving under the influence is not indicative of a substance-abuse problem. People make mistakes; it’s part of the human condition. If indeed culpable, as Pucin appears prepared to adjudge, Mr. Barkley no doubt will attend to the criminal consequences. Here’s hoping we’re not denied the benefit of his engaging wit and intelligence.
