Galaxy finally wins one for a change
Substitute Edson Buddle scored the winning goal late in the second half to give the Galaxy a 2-1 win over Toronto FC on Saturday, extending its unbeaten streak to 10 games.
It also was the first victory for the Galaxy (2-1-9) after five consecutive ties.
“I think our team refuses to lose, and that’s a positive sign,” Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said. “Certainly we need to win more games.”
With the score tied, 1-1, in the 77th minute, Alan Gordon’s pass sent a streaking Buddle in alone to score against his former team. The goal was the second of the season for Buddle, who came on in the 66th minute for Chris Klein.
Gordon had given the Galaxy an early lead with his third goal of the season. Eddie Lewis’ corner kick in the sixth minute found an unmarked Gordon, who headed a shot past goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
Toronto (4-5-4) drew even in the 62nd minute after Chad Barrett’s shot bounced off the post to striker Danny Dichio, who headed it into an open net. The Galaxy pleaded for an offside call, but after the linesman and match official convened, it was ruled a goal.
The Galaxy was without leading scorer Landon Donovan, who was playing for the U.S. in a World Cup qualifier against Honduras. Toronto was without its top scorer, Amado Guevara of Honduras.
