U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested 19 suspected illegal immigrants Tuesday after a boat left them on the beach at Del Mar in northern San Diego County, officials said.

An agent spotted the boat about 3 a.m. The 19 were arrested on Dog Beach on the northern edge of Del Mar near the mouth of the San Dieguito River and across from the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The boat fled but was caught by the U.S. Coast Guard off La Jolla. Three people on the 19-foot boat were arrested. Of the 22 arrested, 17 are men and five are women. They are in federal custody.
