Update: The SuperLiga, an eight-team competition pitting four MLS clubs against four of their Mexican league counterparts, comes at exactly the wrong time for slumping Chivas USA. After getting off to the best start in its history, Coach Preki’s team has lost three of its last four games and has fallen to second place in the Western Conference of MLS. On top of that, starting defender Jonathan Bornstein and midfielder Sacha Kljestan are in South Africa, playing for the U.S. in the Confederations Cup. Already short-handed because of a spate of long-term injuries, Chivas now has to play three SuperLiga games in eight days: Tigres tonight, the Chicago Fire in Illinois on Tuesday night, and San Luis of Mexico back in Carson next Saturday. Chivas was 1-1-1 in last year’s SuperLiga and failed to advance from the first round. Tigres UANL, from Monterrey, is coming off a poor season that saw high-profile coaches Manuel Lapuente and Jose Pekerman fail to turn around the team’s fortunes as it barely escaped relegation to a lower division. The team features former Chivas midfielder Juan Pablo Garcia and American-born Mexican international Edgar Castillo.
