A convict awaiting execution for the murder of his ex-wife’s husband in San Diego County has died of natural causes, California prison officials announced Saturday.

Lawrence Edward Bergman, 60, who had been on death row at San Quentin State Prison since 1997, was pronounced dead Friday evening at a hospital outside the facility. The specific cause of death was not disclosed

Bergman was sentenced to death for the slaying of Edwin Stark, who was bludgeoned, stabbed and strangled on Jan. 17, 1996, after he interrupted a robbery at his home. Three days later, Stark’s body was found in a shallow grave off the Sycuan Peak Trail in east San Diego County.
