CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / STATEWIDE

Share

Four months after a gay marriage ban passed by a four-point margin, Californians remain evenly divided on the question of whether they want to repeal the ban, according to a new Field Poll.

The California Supreme Court is considering whether to invalidate Proposition 8, which was approved by voters 52% to 48% in November.

If the court allows the ban to remain in effect, as many observers predict, activists say there will almost certainly be a new ballot measure in the next few years to repeal Prop. 8.

The Field Poll found that 48% of the state’s registered voters would support allowing same-sex marriage, and 47% would reject invalidating Prop. 8.

The poll surveyed 761 voters between Feb. 20 and March 1.
