Salute to the Warners

The Warner Brothers -- the actual brothers, not the studio -- get their due as American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre celebrates Harry, Sam, Albert and Jack with a “Classics and Pre-Codes Film” festival. Starting things off tonight is the deliciously ebullient and sexy 1935 swashbuckler “Captain Blood,” which made stars of its young leads, Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. On Friday, the Egyptian presents the 2008 documentary “The Brothers Warner” and the 1942 soap opera “Kings Row,” with Ronald Reagan, Robert Cummings and Ann Sheridan.

The underrated 1946 film noir “Nobody Lives Forever,” with the always terrific John Garfield, screens Saturday along with the 1939 James Cagney-George Raft prison drama “Each Dawn I Die.” Veteran actor Richard Erdman, who appears in “Forever,” will be on hand for a discussion.

John Huston’s 1948 masterwork “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” starring Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt and Huston’s father, Walter, in his Oscar-winning performance, is set for Sunday, as well as the rarely seen 1941 adaptation of Jack London’s “The Sea Wolf,” with Edward G. Robinson, Garfield and Ida Lupino.

At the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre, a tribute to the late noir writer Donald E. Westlake is scheduled this evening with 1972’s “The Hot Rock,” starring Robert Redford, and 1973’s “Cops and Robbers,” with Cliff Gorman and Joseph Bologna.

A very young Don Johnson takes to the screen tonight at the New Beverly Cinema with a new print of the 1975 cult classic “A Boy and His Dog.” The 1961 thriller “The Day the Earth Caught Fire” fills out the double bill. www.newbevcinema.com.

The Silent Movie Theatre’s “Hollywood Gothic” Friday night series continues with Nicholas Ray’s seminal 1950 film noir “In a Lonely Place,” starring Bogart. www.silent movietheatre.com.
