Maryland, down by 18, rallies to win

Maryland senior Marissa Coleman scored a career-high 42 points, including the go-ahead basket with 27.9 seconds left, as the Terrapins rallied from 18 down to beat Vanderbilt 78-74 on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

The No. 1-seeded team in the Raleigh Regional used a late 15-3 run to erase an 11-point deficit and didn’t lead until Demauria Liles made a layup with 2:07 left.

Coleman finished 15 for 27 from the field, made 10 of 11 free throws, had 15 rebounds and had the ball in her hands on every important possession.

Christina Wirth scored a career-high 28 points to lead fourth-seeded Vanderbilt (26-9). Her free throws with 42.4 seconds left tied the score, 74-74. Coleman then put Maryland (31-4) ahead to stay on their next trip downcourt with a fall-away jump shot.

No. 3 Louisville 56, No. 2 Baylor 39 -- Angel McCoughtry had 22 points and 12 rebounds at Raleigh to help the Cardinals reach their first regional championship game in school history.

Candyce Bingham had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinals (32-4). Her total included a pair of three-pointers during a 12-0 spurt in the final eight minutes that finally blunted a gritty performance by the Bears (29-6).

Louisville, which closed the game on an 18-2 run, advanced to play Maryland.

Melissa Jones scored 13 points to lead the Bears, who had to fight their way through their first two games and never found their shooting range against the Cardinals, making only 25% of their shots.

The Bears never got the lead down to single digits after McCoughtry’s three-point play and managed only one field goal over the last 8 1/2 minutes.

No. 2 Stanford 84, No. 3 Ohio State 66 -- Jayne Appel had 25 points and 11 rebounds while dominating her low-post matchup with Jantel Lavender, and Stanford moved to within one win of its second straight trip to the Final Four after the victory in the Berkeley Regional.

Jillian Harmon had 16 points, six assists and countless hustle plays for the Cardinal (32-4), and Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 15 points in their 19th consecutive victory. Stanford finished with a 14-2 run that included three low-post baskets by Appel, the Pacific 10 Conference player of the year.

Lavender, the Big Ten player of the year, had 15 points and seven rebounds while battling foul trouble for the Buckeyes (29-6).

No. 4 Iowa State 69, No. 9 Michigan State 68 -- Alison Lacey made a three-pointer from the top of the key with 23 seconds left and the Cyclones scored the final eight points to beat the Spartans at Berkeley.

The comeback win helped this season’s Cyclones squad join the 1999 version that was honored earlier this year as the only ones to go this far in the women’s tournament.

Nicky Wieben started the comeback with her only basket of the game on a putback and the Cyclones (27-8) turned up the defensive pressure. A steal by Kelsey Bolte in the backcourt led to Heather Ezell’s banked-in three-pointer that cut the lead to 68-66 with a minute to go.

Lykendra Johnson then turned it over in the backcourt again for Michigan State (22-11), setting up Lacey’s heroics. Kalisha Keane missed a three-pointer in the closing seconds, and Aisha Jefferson and Johnson missed close put-backs that would have given the Spartans the win.
