32nd Congressional District
The race to fill the vacancy in the San Gabriel Valley-based 32nd Congressional District has been costly and contentious.
Among the 12 vying in a May 19 special election to replace Hilda Solis, now the U.S. secretary of Labor, are two seasoned, well-financed politicians: Democrats Gil Cedillo, a state senator, and Judy Chu, a member of the state Board of Equalization.
Also running are Democrats Emanuel Pleitez, a young political newcomer; filmmaker Stefan “Contreras” Lysenko; Francisco Alonso, a former mayor of Monterey Park; Benita Duran, a former district deputy to Solis; kitchen designer Rafael F. Nadal; and attorney Nick Juan Mostert.
Three Republicans are running in this strongly Democratic district. They are South El Monte restaurant owner Teresa Hernandez; Monterey Park Councilwoman Betty Tom Chu; and David A. Truax, a business owner and police chaplain.
Libertarian Christopher M. Agrella also is running.
There will be a July 14 runoff if no candidate wins a majority on May 19.
