TIMES WIRE REPORTS

Randy Babbitt, an aviation consultant and former leader of a pilots union, was confirmed by the Senate to lead the Federal Aviation Administration.

Babbitt begins a five-year term as the FAA’s 16th administrator. President Obama announced the nomination March 27.

Babbitt, who was an Eastern Airlines pilot and flew for 25 years, takes over as the agency works to use satellites rather than ground-based radar to guide airplanes.
