This is a fix?

I’ve been attending UCLA basketball games and other events at Pauley Pavilion since the early ‘70s, and looking at the drawing of the redesigned arena, I could hardly tell that any changes were made. The seats behind the baskets look as far away from the court as they ever have been, except there are a couple rows of high-priced seats blocking the view.

For $185 million, one would think that the floor could be lowered, bringing the fans closer to the court. Many more rows of seats would thus be added, perhaps offsetting the need for the few “high-roller” seats that should be reserved for professional teams, such as the Lakers and the Trojans.

The article about the preposterous Pauley Pavilion proposal is another example of the “crybaby generation” being sold a bill of goods by predatory developers. I attended nearly every home game at Pauley from 1969 to 1972. I do not recall ever having a “personal accident” because the bathrooms were too crowded or requiring back surgery because the seats were uncomfortable or being diagnosed with an eating disorder because of limited access to food or water.

That the configuration of Pauley somehow is now bad is like complaining that an upstairs bedroom is unhealthy because you have to walk up the stairs. If the snack bars and restrooms at Pauley need to be repaired or updated for other than a salesman’s reasons, then go ahead and do so. Otherwise, spend the $185 million on something that will actually help the students’ education.
