Sabbatini, Mallinger lead PGA event

Rory Sabbatini has already won at Hogan’s Alley. Now the South African shares the lead going into the final round at the PGA Byron Nelson Classic in Irving, Texas.

Sabbatini shot a five-under-par 65 on Saturday to keep a share of the lead with John Mallinger, who also shot a 65 to match Sabbatini at 13-under 197.

Dustin Johnson (66), D.A. Points (65) and Brian Davis (66) were 11 under.

Michael Allen, winless in 271 PGA Tour events, shot a three-under 67 to take a one-shot lead over Jeff Sluman and Tom Kite through three rounds in the Senior PGA Championship at Beachwood, Ohio.

Japanese rookie Mika Miyazato matched the tournament record with a 10-under 62 for a share of the third-round lead with South Korea’s Soo-Yun Kang in the final LPGA Corning Classic in New York.

Serbia wins World Team Cup

Serbia defeated Germany to win the World Team Cup at Duesseldorf, Germany, becoming only the second team in the tournament’s 32-year history to hoist the trophy in its debut.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez won his first ATP Tour title, rallying past Julien Benneteau, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3, in the Austrian Open final at Kitzbuehel. . . . Alexandra Dulgheru, a Romanian qualifier ranked No. 201, won the Warsaw Open in her WTA Tour debut by beating Alona Bondarenko, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-0. . . . Aravane Rezai beat Lucie Hradecka, 7-6 (2), 6-1, to win her first WTA Tour title at the Strasbourg International in France.

Bliss victorious in shortened race

Mike Bliss raced to his first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory since 2004, catching a break to claim the rain-shortened event at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. Bliss had the lead with 39 laps to go when the caution flag came out because of rain and officials called the race with 30 laps left.

Ryan Villopoto won the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship opener in his 450 Class debut, sweeping both motos in the South Point Hotel & Casino Motocross National at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino. . . . Formula One championship leader Jenson Button earned the pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix with a fast lap of 1 minute 14.902 seconds.

Pumas reaches Mexican finals

Dario Veron scored in the 89th minute on a header to lift Pumas into the Mexican league finals despite losing 2-1 to Puebla. Pumas won the first leg 2-1 leaving the aggregate at 3-3. But Pumas advanced because of their better finish -- third -- in the regular season.

Pumas will face either tournament favorite Pachuca or Ciudad Juarez in the finals.

Wolfsburg won its first German Bundesliga title when it beat Werder Bremen, 5-1, in the final round.

Menchov keeps his lead in Giro

Simon Gerrans of Australia won the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia with a long breakaway at Bologna, and Denis Menchov of Russia kept the overall leader’s pink jersey.

Menchov remained 34 seconds in front of Danilo Di Luca of Italy. U.S. rider Levi Leipheimer trails Menchov by 43 seconds in third place.

Oregon backup quarterback Justin Roper has decided to transfer and has been granted his release. Oregon Coach Chip Kelly said the 6-foot-6, 204-pound Georgia native made the decision after emerging from spring drills behind Ducks starter Jeremiah Masoli. . . . Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon was ruled ineligible for his senior season by the NCAA because of a failed drug test. He said he had inadvertently taken a banned substance, which he did not identify, that turned up positive during a random NCAA test in February. An appeal was denied, in effect ending his college football career.

Second-seeded Syracuse defeated third-seeded Duke, 17-7, in an NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse semifinal at Foxborough, Mass. On Monday, the Orange will face fifth-seeded Cornell, which upset top-seeded Virginia, 15-6.
