DIRT MILE

Furthest Land brought Julien Leparoux his third win of the two-day event by winning the $1-million Dirt Mile. The horse ran a smart and measured race, running the rail until the stretch, when he angled out between horses and took the lead with 70 yards to go. He held off a hard-charging Ready’s Echo, who entered the stretch seventh and finished three-quarters of a length behind.

The horse was a $35,000 claiming horse in October 2008 when Ken Ramsey bought him. “Well, now he might be voted claimer of the year,” said Ramsey of a nonexistent award. Asked if the 4-year-old gelding will be back next year, Ramsey said: “I’ll answer the question like this: Is the pope a Catholic?”
