There are probably a number of reasons why it’s harder to keep college football players out of trouble these days [“Fretting With the Program,” Sept. 13]. One reason is that some of the players are not in college for education.
College is just a place to hang out while they’re waiting to be discovered by pro scouts.
A student-athlete needs to bring more to the college scene than a talent for playing football. A desire to learn might be a start.
If they want to just hang out, may I suggest the library. They’re not apt to get into a lot of trouble there, and they just might learn something.
At USC, the library is right across the street from the statue of Tommy Trojan. It’s the big building with the fountain in front of it. I don’t know why I felt it necessary to say that.
