Hunter wins ninth straight Gold Glove

Angels outfielder Torii Hunter won his ninth consecutive Gold Glove for fielding excellence on Tuesday, leaving him one short of the record for consecutive Gold Gloves by an American League outfielder.

Detroit’s Al Kaline and Seattle’s Ken Griffey both won 10 Gold Gloves in a row, one better than Hunter and Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki, who also won his ninth straight Gold Glove on Tuesday.

Also named to the American League Gold Glove team were Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, who played at Long Beach State; former Angels first baseman Mark Teixeira, now in New York; and his Yankees teammate, shortstop Derek Jeter.

Baseball general managers failed to take a vote on expanding instant replay following a postseason filled with blown calls by umpires. Jimmie Lee Solomon, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner’s office, said GMs listened to a report on replay, “but it was all confined to the current instant replay system that we have.”

Phelps fails to qualify for finals

Sporting a beard and an old-style swimsuit, Michael Phelps missed out on two finals and barely qualified for a third at a World Cup short-course meet in Stockholm. Phelps failed to qualify for the finals of the 100-meter freestyle and 100 backstroke. He qualified in the 100 medley, finishing seventh in 53.13 seconds.

Jing Zhao of China set a world record in the women’s 50 backstroke in 26.08 at the event, and Kaio Almeida of Brazil broke the world record in the men’s 200-meter butterfly in 1 minute, 49.11 seconds.

Davydenko, Tsonga win

Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nikolay Davydenko won second-round matches at the Paris Masters to stay in contention for the ATP World Tour Finals. Tsonga defeated Albert Montanes, 6-1, 7-5 and Davydenko cruised past Benjamin Becker, 6-2, 6-1.

Pavlik to defend titles next month

Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will defend his titles next month against Miguel Espino, in Pavlik’s first fight since February. Trainer Jack Loew told the Associated Press that Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) signed the contract Monday for a Dec. 19 bout at the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University in Pavlik’s Ohio hometown.

The University of Arkansas suspended five men’s basketball players, including three athletes identified in a rape complaint that did not result in charges, for violating unspecified team rules. Coach John Pelphrey said guards Courtney Fortson and Stefan Welsh were suspended indefinitely. Guard Marcus Britt was suspended for six games, forward Glenn Bryant two games, and walk-on guard Nick Mason will not dress for games during the fall semester. . . . Seton Hall University has suspended a men’s basketball player indefinitely after he was charged in a wrong-way crash. Police say Keon Lawrence has been charged with driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. . . . The NCAA says the oldest son of Michael Jordan will miss the first two games of the season for No. 23 Illinois after playing in an unsanctioned event last summer.

Shaquille O’Neal’s wife is splitting up with the Cleveland Cavaliers center. Shaunie O’Neal filed for legal separation with intent to divorce Monday in Los Angeles. She cited irreconcilable differences.

An independent investigation of the death of a Boston Celtics fan who stopped breathing while in police custody found that officers acted reasonably and did not contribute to the man’s death, but also concluded that police made some mistakes during the arrest. David Woodman was arrested on suspicion of public drinking on June 18, 2008, during the Celtics’ championship celebrations.
