A 2 1/2 -mile stretch of coastline from 1st Place to Belmont Pier in Long Beach was closed Sunday after about 1,400 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the ocean, Fire Department officials said.
The spill Saturday night originated in a leaking sewage line near 65 S. Cedar Ave. The sewage entered the storm system and reached water near Shoreline Village, at the mouth of the Los Angeles River.
This is the second sewage spill in two weeks that has prompted beach closures.
The beaches will remain closed until test results conclude that bacteria levels are within state limits.
