Serbia, Spain meet for the title in Europe

World champion Spain defeated Greece, 82-64, on Saturday at Katowice, Poland, to advance to the European basketball championship final against Serbia.

The win gives Spain, a six-time tournament runner-up, another shot at its first European title today. Serbia beat Slovenia, 96-92, in overtime behind 32 points from Milos Teodosic.

Spain held Greece without a point for the first four minutes of the second quarter to open a 34-24 lead that Greece couldn’t get below seven points.

Lakers star Pau Gasol led Spain with 18 points, and Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez scored 14.

PRO FOOTBALL

Rice, Smith lead nominees

Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith headline the preliminary list of modern-era nominees for induction next year in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The list includes 131 players, coaches and contributors.

Hall of Fame selectors will chose 25 semifinalists by Nov. 27, and 15 finalists by Jan. 7.

Voting will take place Feb. 6, the day before the Super Bowl.

Other modern-era nominees include Tim Brown, Herschel Walker, Cris Carter, Andre Reed and Sterling Sharpe. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue is also on the list.

The San Diego Chargers have put defensive tackle Jamal Williams, a 12-year veteran, on injured reserve because of a triceps injury, meaning he’ll miss the rest of the season.

MOTOR RACING

Kyle Busch wins truck race

Kyle Busch held off Ron Hornaday and Kevin Harvick to win the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon.

Busch had just enough fuel to survive, running out of gas as he made his way to Victory Lane. The NASCAR star has now won a Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Truck race at the 1.058-mile oval.

HORSE RACING

Rosario target of complaint

The California Horse Racing Board has filed a complaint against the leading jockey from the Del Mar meeting, Joel Rosario, for his ride aboard Cedros in the 11th race at Del Mar on Sept. 6. A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 2.

The CHRB is alleging in its complaint that Rosario broke three CHRB rules and “did not put forward his best effort into riding the horse to the finish.”

Cedros finished fourth, beaten by a head for the third-place spot, in the 1 1/16 -mile maiden race. The Daily Racing Form first reported the complaint Saturday.

USA Swimming enacts ban

USA Swimming has voted to ban high-tech swimsuits three months before the sport’s world governing body is expected to do the same.

More than 400 delegates representing swim clubs from all 50 states voted overwhelmingly for early implementation of a ban on the suits at USA Swimming’s annual convention in Chicago.

The ban goes into effect Oct. 1 and affects all suits worn in USA Swimming-sanctioned meets.
