Rams linebacker Vobora gets four-game suspension

The NFL has suspended St. Louis Rams linebacker David Vobora without pay for the next four games for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The NFL made the announcement Tuesday and said Vobora’s suspension begins immediately. He can return to the active roster Oct. 26.

Vobora was the last overall pick of last year’s draft. He became a starter this year.

Pennington is out, Thigpen is in

The Miami Dolphins placed quarterback Chad Pennington on the injured-reserve list to create a roster spot for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed draft pick.

Pennington hurt his right shoulder Sunday at San Diego, an injury that leaves his career in jeopardy. Thigpen shores up depth behind second-year pro Chad Henne, who is expected to make his first NFL start Sunday against Buffalo.

Trotter returns

Jeremiah Trotter, a four-time Pro Bowl linebacker, signed a one-year contract to return to the Philadelphia Eagles after spending a year out of the NFL. The Eagles released quarterback Jeff Garcia to make room for Trotter. . . . The Tennessee Titans have brought back veteran returner Mark Jones weeks after releasing him. Tennessee placed Craig Hentrich on injured reserve, after the veteran punter strained a calf muscle Sept. 20.

Injury report

The New Orleans Saints have placed former Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown on injured reserve because of his hip injury, ending his season. . . . Dallas running back Felix Jones has a sprained ligament in his left knee and his status for the Cowboys’ game at Denver is uncertain. . . . Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney could miss two to three weeks because of an injured right quadriceps, a report on ESPN’s website said.
