Kevin Harvick wins with last pass at Talladega

Jamie McMurray held the bottom line at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, one eye on the finish line and the other on his rearview mirror. He was certain if he stayed put, Kevin Harvick’s lone attempt to pass would be on the outside.

He was wrong.

Harvick ducked low in the tri-oval at Talladega, then drag-raced McMurray to the finish line Sunday, nipping the Daytona 500 winner for his first victory in more than three years. Harvick had been mired in a 115-race drought dating to the 2007 Daytona 500.

The race went 200 laps because of three attempts at NASCAR’s version of overtime, and there were a record 88 lead changes among a record 29 drivers.

Brad Keselowski won the Nationwide Series race in the second half of a NASCAR doubleheader at Talladega.

Joey Logano was second and Harvick third.

Bohn wins Zurich Classic

Jason Bohn won the Zurich Classic for his second PGA Tour title, birdieing three of the final four holes at TPC Louisiana in Avondale for a five-under-par 67 and a two-stroke victory over Jeff Overton.

Bohn, who completed a third-round 71 in the morning in the weather-plagued tournament, finished at 18-under 270.

Overton mounted a persistent challenge, twice tying Bohn on his way to a 66.

Mark O’Meara got the help he needed to win for the first time on the Champions Tour.

O’Meara and Nick Price teamed to beat Joey Sindelar and John Cook on the second hole of a playoff in the better-ball Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Savannah, Ga.

O’Meara, the 1998 Masters and British Open winner, won for the first time since the PGA European Tour’s 2004 Dubai Desert Classic.

Cook and Sindelar (61) and O’Meara and Price (62) finished at 28-under 188 in the 54-hole event.

U.S. beats Russia in Fed Cup

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Liezel Huber sent the United States into the Fed Cup final with a 6-3, 6-1 doubles victory over Russia’s Elena Dementieva and Alla Kudryavtseva at Birmingham, Ala.

The Americans will meet defending champion Italy for the second straight year in the final in November at an undetermined site in the United States. The U.S. has won a record 17 times.

Mattek-Sands beat Ekaterina Makarova, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, earlier Sunday to keep the U.S. title hopes alive. Dementieva’s 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, 6-3 win over Melanie Oudin had put the Russians up, 2-1.

Spain’s Fernando Verdasco beat Robin Soderling of Sweden, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to win the Barcelona Open final in his homeland.

Abby Sunderland, the 16-year-old from Thousand Oaks who has been trying to sail around the world alone without stopping, will have to pull in to Cape Town, South Africa, for repairs, she said in a blog post.

Trying to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, she will continue the trip after having repairs to her 40-foot boat.
