The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan:

Joseph A. Bauer, 27, of Cincinnati; specialist, Army. Bauer was among four soldiers killed by a roadside bomb July 24 in Qalat, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Mario D. Carazo, 41, of Carlsbad; lieutenant colonel, Marine Corps. Carazo was one of two Marines killed July 22 when their Cobra attack helicopter crashed while on a combat mission in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Andrew L. Hand, 25, of Enterprise, Ala.; private first class, Army. Hand was among four soldiers killed by a roadside bomb July 24 in Qalat, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Jason E. Holbrook, 28, of Burnet, Texas; captain, Army. Holbrook was one of two soldiers killed by a roadside bomb Thursday while on reconnaissance patrol in Tsagay in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Abram L. Howard, 21, of Williamsport, Pa.; lance corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Howard was killed by a roadside bomb Tuesday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the Headquarters and Service Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group in North Versailles, Pa.

Daniel Lim, 23, of Cypress; sergeant, Army. Lim was among four soldiers killed by a roadside bomb July 24 in Qalat, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Shane R. Martin, 23, of Spring, Texas; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Martin was killed by a roadside bomb Thursday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Justin McNeley, 30, of Kingman, Ariz.; petty officer second class, Navy. McNeley’s body was recovered July 25 after he and another sailor disappeared July 23 and were ambushed by Taliban fighters in central Afghanistan’s Lowgar province, south of Kabul. He was assigned to Assault Craft Unit 1 in San Diego.

Conrad A. Mora, 24, of San Diego; staff sergeant, Army. Mora was among four soldiers killed by a roadside bomb July 24 in Qalat, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Jarod Newlove, 25, of Renton, Wash.; petty officer third class, Navy. Newlove’s body was recovered Wednesday after he and another sailor disappeared July 23 and were ambushed by Taliban fighters in central Afghanistan’s Lowgar province, south of Kabul. He was assigned to the commander, Navy Reserve Force Command.

Frederik E. Vazquez, 20, of Melrose Park, Ill.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Vazquez was killed July 24 while supporting combat operations in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Kyle R. Warren, 28, of Manchester, N.H.; staff sergeant, Army. Warren was one of two soldiers killed by a roadside bomb Thursday while on reconnaissance patrol in Tsagay in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

James M. Weis, 37, of Toms River, N.J.; major, Marine Corps. Weis was one of two Marines killed July 22 when their Cobra attack helicopter crashed while on a combat mission in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
