Statistical change costs Steelers’ Rashard Mendenhall a 100-yard rushing game

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall lost the extra yard he was incorrectly credited with last Sunday against the New York Jets, costing him a 100-yard game.

The Elias Sports Bureau, the NFL’s statisticians, deducted the extra yard that Mendenhall was given on a nine-yard run to the Jets 26-yard line in the second quarter. There was confusion when the chain crew accidentally began moving the yard markers, so referee Peter Morelli’s crew put the ball at the 25 and signaled a first down.

The Steelers’ statisticians then credited Mendenhall with a 10-yard run. Elias changed it to a nine-yard gain and tacked the phantom yard onto a sack of Ben Roethlisberger on the following play.

Mendenhall finished with 99 yards in 17 carries, his second 99-yard game this season.

Three Colts to sit

The Indianapolis Colts will be without three defensive starters Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

Team spokesman Craig Kelley said cornerback Kelvin Hayden, linebacker Clint Session, defensive tackle Daniel Muir and backup running back Mike Hart did not make the trip.

Session hasn’t played since Nov. 1 because of a broken right forearm and a dislocated right elbow. Hayden will sit out his third game in a row because of a neck injury. Muir is sitting out because of a chest injury, meaning the Colts will be without their best run-stopper against Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.

The good news for the Colts: Two-time 1,000-yard runner Joseph Addai made the trip and is likely to play for the first time since hurting a nerve in his left shoulder Oct. 17.

Redskins sign two players

The Washington Redskins signed safety Sha’reff Rashad and defensive lineman Joe Joseph to their active roster.

The team also put defensive lineman Kedric Golston on injured reserve and released defensive lineman Jeremy Clark.

Rashad signed with the Redskins’ practice squad Nov. 8. He was undrafted out of Central Florida in 2009.

Joseph signed with Washington’s practice squad Dec. 15. He originally signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent out of Miami and was released Sept. 4. He joined the New York Giants’ practice squad Dec. 1 before being released Dec. 14.
