Momentum: Texas fans went nuts when safety Blake Gideon intercepted a pass by Alabama punter P.J. Fitzgerald on the first possession. But Alabama settled down and regained a measure of control by stopping the Longhorns three times from the two-yard line and forcing a field goal. Texas came back and recovered a pooch kick, setting up Hunter Lawrence’s 42-yard field goal for a 6-0 lead.
Unanswered questions: What prompted Nick Saban to try a fake punt so early and deep in ‘Bama territory? Is Colt McCoy OK? The quarterback suffered a shoulder injury on his fifth play and true freshman Garrett Gilbert played the rest of the quarter.
Did you notice? Alabama’s Greg McElroy appeared nervous and could not get a pass off against Texas’ blitz until late in the quarter.
