Screening Room: ‘Easy Rider’ at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Share

What better way to celebrate America this Fourth of July weekend than by jumping on a motorcycle and leaving a trail of havoc in your wake? Better yet, do it vicariously with the late Dennis Hopper, who stars in, co-wrote and directed the seminal 1969 biker movie “Easy Rider,” which also stars Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson as a boozy Southern attorney — his first Oscar-nominated role. The classic screens Saturday at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. https://www.cinespia.org

You might think the upcoming holiday was Halloween given some of the chills on tap with the American Cinematheque’s programming at the Egyptian Theatre. Start with a renewed fear of the beach on Thursday with the 1975 blockbuster “Jaws,” directed by Steven Spielberg, and then go on to a very justifiable fear of going 12 rounds with a solid wall of muscle in the 1976 Oscar-winning best picture, “Rocky.” On tap for Friday is Stanley Kubrick’s flat-out scary 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Shining,” starring Jack Nicholson at his creepy best. Saturday offers up a triple bill of mind-bending fun with “The Matrix” flicks.

The Aero Theatre is going for the laughs Thursday evening with an Abbott and Costello double bill from 1942, “Who Done It?” and “Pardon My Sarong.”

The craziness continues Friday with a double bill of two “Pink Panther” classics starring the great Peter Sellers: 1963’s “The Pink Panther” and 1964’s “A Shot in the Dark.” And on Saturday, the Aero gets all patriotic with the 1972 film version of the Broadway musical “1776.” https://www.americancinematheque.com

Eye-popping

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Getting Perspective III: Exploring the Craft of 3D Movie Technology,” which examines 3-D techniques for animated and live action films, winds up this Tuesday at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre with a screening of the 2008 concert film “U2 3D.” The evening is to be hosted by Rob Engle, senior stereographer and 3-D visual effects supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks. https://www.oscars.org
