Picking All-Stars
A look at how All-Star teams are selected:
American League
Step 1: Fans vote for nine starters, including the designated hitter.
Step 2: Players elect nine position players, including a reserve DH and eight pitchers — five starters and three relievers.
Step 3: Manager names seven players — usually five pitchers and two position players.
Step 4: Manager selects five names to be considered in an Internet fan vote that will determine the final spot on the team. These are usually position players but can be pitchers depending on the breakdown of Step 3.
National League

Step 2: Players elect eight position players and eight pitchers — five starters and three relievers.
Step 3: Manager names nine players — usually five pitchers and four position players, one of which will probably start as the DH.
