The Oakland Athletics put starting pitcher Ben Sheets on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right elbow.

The move is retroactive to Tuesday, and the team recalled pitcher Cedrick Bowers from triple-A Sacramento to take Sheets’ place on the roster.

Sheets is 4-9 with a 4.53 earned run average in 20 starts for the A’s in his first season with the club. This is Sheets’ seventh stint on the disabled list in his career, and he had made 30 starts in only half of his eight seasons prior to joining the A’s.

Etc.

The Texas Rangers put catcher Matt Treanor on the 15-day DL after he suffered a sprained knee ligament in Friday’s game against the Angels.

In 64 games this season, Treanor is batting .225 with five home runs and 23 runs batted in.

To replace Treanor on the roster, the team recalled catcher Taylor Teagarden from double-A Frisco (Texas).

The San Francisco Giants put pitcher Jeremy Affeldt on the 15-day DL because of a strain on his left side.

The veteran left-hander has appeared in 37 games in relief and has posted a record of 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA and three saves.

To fill the roster spot, the Giants recalled right-hander Joe Martinez from triple-A Fresno.
