Update: The Galaxy takes a break from MLS play when it plays the first game of a two-game, total-goals series against the Puerto Rico Islanders that will advance the winner to the 16-team CONCACAF Champions League. The second match will be in Puerto Rico on Aug. 4. The Galaxy is in the qualifying competition as the result of its runner-up finish in the 2009 MLS season. The Islanders are in because they won the Caribbean Football Union championship. Three other MLS teams are involved: the Columbus Crew is in the qualifying phase as the 2009 Supporters’ Shield winner, while Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders went directly into the final 16 as MLS champion and U.S. Open Cup winner, respectively. The Galaxy won the CONCACAF Champions League in 2001 and was runner-up in 1997. The tournament was then known as the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
