The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Graco Children’s Products Inc. on Thursday announced a voluntary recall of about 1.2 million Harmony highchairs because they pose a fall hazard to children.

“The screws holding the front legs of the highchair can loosen and fall out and/or the plastic bracket on the rear legs can crack, causing the highchair to become unstable and tip over unexpectedly,” a news release said.

Graco has received 464 reports of screws loosening or brackets cracking on the highchairs, resulting in the chairs’ tipping over. These incidents resulted in 24 reports of injuries including “bumps and bruises to the head, a hairline fracture to the arm, and cuts, bumps, bruises and scratches to the body.”

The highchairs were manufactured in the U.S. between November 2003 and December 2009 and are no longer in production. They were available for purchase from December 2003 through this month for $70 to $120 at Burlington Coat Factory, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Sears, Target, Target.com, Wal-Mart, WalMart.com, Shopko, USA Baby and other retailers nationwide, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

All Harmony-model highchairs are included in the recall. The model number can be found on the underside of the highchair’s foot rest.

Consumers are being advised to stop using the highchairs immediately. Consumers can order a repair kit and receive step-by-step instructions on Graco’s website.
