Married at ‘The Trump’? Well, sort of

Share

Some people tell their guests they’re getting married at “The Trump.” And if you walk into the 5.5-acre city park behind Trump Nation Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes, there’s no reason not to believe it.

But saying your vows at the ocean-view golf course can cost $150,000. Though the city this week more than doubled the price for a wedding at Founders Park, getting married there is still a relative bargain at $1,363 -- if you live in Rancho Palos Verdes. If you’re from out of town, the nuptials will set you back $1,693.

Trump, which had managed the city park rentals for the last three years, had said it was losing money on the discount weddings and wanted to raise the price for a three-hour ceremony to $2,670 for residents and $3,000 for nonresidents. The prices had been $585 and $915.

Mayor Steve Wolowicz said city staff sat down with the Trump staff and worked out an agreement that the City Council unanimously passed Tuesday.

The new price includes valet service, a security guard and cleanup. The number of guests will be capped at 100.

“Honestly, it’s still a deal in Palos Verdes,” said Theresa Sauter, who was married in August at the bluff-top park with spectacular ocean views. “It’s just a shame because it’s a public park.”

Trump, which under the old contract was receiving $165 for each rental, will receive $610 under the new deal, which expires in 18 months.

David Conforti, Trump’s general manager, had complained to the city that people attending weddings at Founders Park assumed they had the same run of the facilities as the $300-a-round golfers, including the locker rooms.

They also walk around the golf course and get rowdy, he wrote.

In the last two years, about 40 weddings have been held at the park.

Conforti did not respond to e-mails or a phone call Thursday.
